FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQ’S)
What is ’Fixed Wireless?
What is ‘Fixed Wireless’?
Fixed Wireless Internet access is exactly what it says:
- Wireless – Kaweah Computers is providing high speed solutions for Internet access via advanced wireless radio technology, NO PHONE LINE IS NEEDED! NO CELL PHONE IS NEEDED! There is no need to worry about slow downloads, busy signals, or disconnections anymore – with wireless Internet your computer is always on the Internet.
- Fixed – Kaweah Computers installs a radio receiver known as a Subscriber Module (SM) or Customer Premises Equipment (CPE) at your home or business. This is not a mobile system like a cell phone, it is a fixed receiver wired into your premises.
How does it work?
How Does It Work?
We install a small wireless radio which is known as a Subscriber Module (SM) at our customer’s location. This is placed somewhere outside near the top of the building, generally mounted to the eave of the roof or the chimney. This unit communicates with our access point, which connects the client to the Internet through our high-speed backbone. We run CAT5 cable from the SM outside your house to your router or a wireless router that we can provide for you. If the customer has a network card, no additional equipment is required.
What is a ‘Radio Mapping Survey’ and an ‘On Site Test’?
What is a ‘Radio Mapping Survey’ and an ‘On Site Test’?
If you are interested in receiving service from Kaweah Computers. The first thing we do is to check your location with our mapping software, to see if you have a line of sight to one of our towers please fill out the form found HERE. After filling out the form my software will show you if we can provide service to your address or not. We may arrange with you to carry out an on-site test, which is a physical signal check. This means we may come to your location with a test radio to see if we can get an acceptable signal. If we can, you’re good to go. We generally arrange the on-site test and installation for one visit so if the test is OK we continue and install then and there. No re-booking and having to wait for your High Speed Internet.
What is ‘Bursting’?
What is ‘Bursting’?
Whatever plan you choose you will enjoy the speed that plan provides. However, with most plans, we provide additional Burst Speeds. This means sometimes you will get higher speeds than your plan speed. This will happen when you first click on a link or type something in a search bar or do a speed test. This bursting effect creates a more enjoyable experience for you, especially at the lower-tier packages. After the bursting takes effect your speed will “settle” down to your chosen service plan rate.
So why, you ask, would you choose a faster plan? The faster plans are designed for people:
- who want to work with larger files (data files, photographs, music files, video files etc.), or
- who want to use Audio and/or Video streaming i.e. Netflix or Pandora, or
- who want to use VoIP telephone service (Voice Over IP), or
- who want to use online meeting software, or
- who are gamers.
- who have a large family with multiple devices connected at once
Why should I use Wireless?
Why should I use Wireless?
You should use Kaweah Computers fixed wireless solution if you want or need a FAST High Speed Internet connection. It is an excellent solution if you are on Satellite or a very slow DSL connection or no connection at all. With Kaweah Computers, you don’t have to settle for slow dial-up internet connections and a second phone line, poor Satellite Internet Service with restrictive data caps, slow DSL lines, or expensive 1.5Mbps T1 lines which can cost you $200-$300 a month. Kaweah Computers service bypasses the phone system by making a direct, dedicated wireless link to our high-speed fiber-backed network. In fact, for our wireless service, you don’t need to have a phone line at all. The phone company works hard at trying to repair the phone lines in Three Rivers but the bottom line is due to the age/water damage and birds they have become unreliable for Internet connections and have a high failure rate during the rainy season.
How much does it cost?
How much does it cost?
We offer several service options to choose from, these cover both Residential, SoHo (Small Office Home Office), and Business. Prices start at only $49 a month!! Custom plans can be created on an as-needed basis. All plans include a $75 install fee.
What about uploads?
What about uploads?
The Kaweah Computers wireless service can tailor your upload need on a case-by-case basis. This means that customers who need to upload photos, transfer files, send audio or video regularly can be assured there are solutions and speeds to fit your need. For Business customers, we can offer a more Symmetrical service (upload and download are more the same speed) if needed.
Is this like Satellite service?
Is this like Satellite service?
NO! Satellite service suffers from several inherent technical problems that are not an issue for our wireless service:
- With Satellite service, you have to bounce your signal out of the atmosphere to an orbiting satellite and then back to a central location around the Internet and back again. These huge hops add hundreds of milliseconds of latency that ruin interactive applications and even make some Web sites look slow. Our wireless signal travels from a few hundred feet to a few miles to our nearest access point location. These short distances allow for low latency and high throughput in both directions, after that small wireless link you connect directly to a very high-speed low latency dedicated fiber network.
- Very slow upload speeds.
- Speed throttling. Many Satellite providers have a policy known as FAP (Fair Use Policy); under this policy, they will throttle your downloads to Dial-Up speeds if you download more than a certain amount in a short period and may charge you ridiculous fees for going over your monthly allotment.
- VoIP Phones do not usually work with Satellite.
- VPN does not usually work correctly with Satellite.
- Online Gaming works very poorly with Satellite if at all.
- Video chat is “jumpy” and may not work at all.
Bandwidth vs Latency Internet speed explained
Bandwidth vs Latency Internet speed explained
Bandwidth isn’t always synonymous with the speed of your internet connection. There are many other factors involved. I can show you a real-life example of a 100 Mbps that is much “slower” than a 10 Mbps connection provided by Kaweah Computers. Consider the internet as a highway. In this example, the number of lanes would be the bandwidth. The more lanes the more cars (packets) can get to their destination in a shorter amount of time. Latency would be the speed they are going. Think of latency as the road being smooth so the cars can travel fast or bumpy so the cars are forced to slow down, low latency is a smooth road. This is why satellite internet can sometimes have a decent upload and download but still be poorly suited for things like gaming or live video, it has extremely high latency. If you’re doing anything that requires live feedback from the other end then latency is incredibly important. If you just want to download big files from somewhere then bandwidth is more important. I get asked often about my bandwidth options and people are hesitant to try us out because they just came from a big city with a 500Mbps package and look at my bandwidth packages as inferior. Not to mention that 500 Mbps package is resold 15 times over because they know a typical household is going to use maybe 10% of that bandwidth. It’s a sales gimmick and it works quite well. Without getting too technical I usually try to say sometimes it is more about quality than quantity. Here is a quote that can be found in my reviews: “Cancelled Starlink and am sticking with Kaweah Computers. Since moving to Three Rivers I’ve tried every ISP I could for a solid connection to the internet. Daniel’s solution is clearly superior to everything I’ve tried. Very happy with my upgrade and I’m very happy with the personal support. Can’t buy anything better. Thank you Daniel!” Also a website made by a customer describing my Internet service being faster and more responsive than his connection in San Fransisco. http://southforkdrive.com/
What’s bad about fixed wireless service?
What’s bad about fixed wireless service?
The disadvantage of our wireless service is that it requires line-of-sight between the customer’s premises and our access point/tower. No rocks, buildings, hills, or mountains. If you do not have good line-of-sight to one of our access points then there is a probability that you will not be able to get service. The only way to be sure if you will get a signal is to fill out a customer contact form so we can check the address and if needed have us come to your location and perform a site survey to check the signal strength. Unfortunately, if we can’t get a signal then we can’t provide Kaweah Computers wireless service at this time. However, I will be continually growing the network and adding additional access point locations, so service may become available in the future.
What Equipment is Required?
What Equipment is Required?
The equipment provided by Kaweah Computers includes:
- Radio Modem & antenna (sends a wireless signal and mounted outdoors).
- Mounting Hardware.
- CAT5 cable (connects the radio to your computer or router).
- Power Supply.
- Wireless routers are available for an extra one time charge.
Note: Included CAT5 cable is up to 100 feet. very long runs may be an additional charge.
All that is required from you is a computer with an Ethernet card and if you want to connect more than one computer or have Wi-Fi in your house a Wireless Router that Kaweah Computers can supply.
What is included in the Installation?
What is included in the Installation?
External mounting of the Radio and Antenna using a standard mounting bracket. If another method of mounting is required to receive a signal, like a tripod mount and pole, this will be at extra cost. A typical install takes about 2- 3 hours.
Running CAT5 cable from the Antenna to one location in the premises. Up to 100 feet of CAT5 is included in the installation price. Cabling will be run on the exterior of the building, aesthetically fastened to the walls. Access to the inside will be via a hole drilled through the wall or use of an existing point of entry if available. Internal wiring distance is up to 20 feet from the point of entry and next to an electrical outlet, the cable will be fastened if required (along skirting boards when possible). Any additional work may be charged at the standard rate of $85 per hour.
How can I connect more than one device or computer?
How can I connect more than one device or computer?
To do this you will need a Router. You can provide your own or Kaweah Computers can provide a router for you. Our managed WiFi routers are $5.00/month, or $4.00/month for smaller homes. Our routers are dual-band and are remotely managed which aids in troubleshooting a problem if needed. You are more than welcome to use your own router. Of course if you lease a router a FREE one will be provided if it ever fails.
Any additional wiring or configuration may be charged at our standard rate of $85 per hour. You are welcome to use your own router and or purchase a one however it is highly recommended to use the ones supplied by Kaweah Computers.
Does weather or trees affect my connection?
Does weather or trees affect my connection?
Generally, the advanced equipment we use is not affected by precipitation or weather.
Installations will not be approved if there is not a clear line of sight or “semi-clear” line of sight to a tower, in the future and as we grow I will be installing tower equipment that may allow for some of the customers that were not previously approved due to trees to be reassessed and move ahead with possible installation. A site survey is necessary to determine whether you will be able to receive a signal. When shooting through trees the signal is more vulnerable to service fluctuations due to violent storms and/or very wet weather. If your signal strength drops below a certain level you will be contacted to see if we can fix the problem or move the antenna or be given the recommendation to trim some tree branches.
Where does the antenna go?
Where does the antenna go?
The higher the better but most importantly clear of any obstructions. Typically we install the antenna at roof peaks or an eve facing the tower. The elevation, immediate surroundings, trees, and distance from our access point will determine how high we have to mount the antenna. The antenna requires a line-of-sight or near line-of-sight to one of our tower sites.
What does the antenna look like?
What does the antenna look like?
There are many different types of antennas, and each is selected for the best performance.
Here is an example of a typical install and most likely what will be installed.
Is this service secure?
Is this service secure?
The service is protected by authentication, proprietary signal processing techniques, and directional antennas which makes it very difficult for anyone to gain unauthorized access. All wireless communication on my network is protected with a minimum of 64-bit encryption and additional de-authentication attack encryption. While no communications network is 100% secure, the difficulty required to exploit data sent over the Kaweah Computers network is at least as high as that for wired and satellite telecommunications networks. The rest of the network is firewalled to keep anyone from accessing any part of the system and to keep anyone from seeing anyone else. No one that is using the service can see anyone else or anyone else’s data! Remember, there is nothing secure about being on the internet however I will make every effort to secure the network while protecting you from outside attacks or exploits.
What is a static public IP Address and why would I need one?
What is a static public IP Address and why would I need one?
A static public IP Address is an address that can be seen and accessed from the Internet and is provided to you at no additional cost unlike any other provider in the area (most every ISP charges extra for this service including AT&T and Spectrum). If you want to run a web or FTP server then you will need a static address. Some other applications can benefit from a static IP Address. For example, if you plan to use an IP camera for security or livestock monitoring it is helpful to have a static IP address to be able to access these devices remotely. Other providers use a dynamic address which change constantly and create big headaches if you want to access those kinds of devices like cameras or alarm systems from the Internet while you are gone.
Is it safe?
Is it safe?
Absolutely. The Radio transceiver generally emits less power than a cell phone, and the antenna will be installed above ground level and pointed away from your house. The equipment used has been certified by the FCC and Kaweah Computers is registered with the FCC as a WISP (wireless internet service provider) and maintains all working power levels per FCC laws for North America.
